República Oriental del Uruguay (official full name in english Eastern Republic of Uruguay) is a small country placed south from Brasil and east of Argentina, to the south lies the Río de la Plata and to the soth-east lies the Atlantic Ocean. The country is one of the richest countries all around South América and exhibits one of the highest Literacy Rates in Latin America. Moreover, Uruguay is recognized as one of the more concerned countries of the world in preserving the environment. Its continental land has an extension of about 176.215 km2 divided into 19 regions called "departamentos" and its population reaches 3 314 466 inhabitants (according to the 2006 census). The capital is Montevideo, the southest department. Being the smallest department in extension, it houses 40% of the conutry's population.

Uruguay is rounded by 650 km of beaches, in which extension you can find several types of sand, sweet or salad waters, desert beaches as well as intensely populated. Main international resort in Uruguay is Punta del Este (Maldonado department), named Touristic Capital of Mercosur and worldwide recognized as the main beach resort in South America. Even when most of international tourists visit the country during the summer months, especially January and February, the Uruguay has developed a number of touristic attractions for the whole year and extended to most departments. Has 6 thermal springs with both sweet and salty waters located on the west coast of the country (departments of Salto and Paysandu), centers of cultural-historical tourism, wich most prominent example is Colonia del Sacramento city, the only city founded by the Portuguese settlers on the 18 th century, by the western coast in the Rio de la Plata and declared by the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Uruguay also has several proposals for ecotourism and agrotourism in almost all departments, from rural places for camping and adventure tourism to accommodation establishments in the countryside for a long stay or just to spend the day.

Traveling along Uruguay |
Unlike many cities around the world, Uruguay has no trains nor subway transport, neither to move from one side to another inside Montevideo nor from one department to another else. However, buses will ride you everywhere because of a well developed net of piublic transport. You can get all the information you need about buses, frequencies and ticket rates checking the site of Tres Cruces bus station.
On special events or religious pilgrimages, there are special train services. In that case you will find the information here in our site Club de Turistas.
For groups of several tourists best option is to take advice at your hotel about hiring a mini bus service for special destinations.
For your presence of mind Uruguay shows one of the highest safetiness in the region, so you can unconcernedly walk over the streets even at nights, take any taxi cab without worrying about being fooled or just rent a car at one of the several companies available.
Visiting Uruguay you can eat high quality meat (considered the best of the world) without "crazy cow" nor aftose from grass-fed cows, drink water and milk with confidence, and to live like in a farm... Uruguay is still natural.
