Geoscience Education and Outreach in the Americas: Opportunities for North-South Collaboration

Dear Colleagues

I would like to invite you to submit papers to the special symposium within the AGU-ASLO Joint Assembly - New Orleans 23-27 May 2005.

ED04: Geoscience Education and Outreach in the Americas: Opportunities for North-South Collaboration

Convenors: Gerardo M. E. Perillo (perillo@criba.edu.ar) - Ivani Pereira (ipereira@pop900.gsfc.nasa.gov)

International research programs that involve collaborations between geoscientists residing in North, Central, and South America provide natural opportunities for expanding education and outreach programs to a global community. Existing research collaborations have focused on a variety of Earth and space science research topics, including: ocean circulation and ocean carbon experiments; Caribbean-Gulf of Mexico hurricane tracking and modeling; satellite observations of land-use, fires, and glacier retreat; networked monitoring of the distribution of non-indigenous aquatic species and atmospheric particulates. This session will bring researchers involved in pan-American multi-national collaborations together with geoscience education and outreach specialists who can develop or adapt relevant educational resources.

Linking these two communities will help to extend the broader impacts of the research programs and advance efforts to develop a scientifically literate public.
